Riches and glory were probably what the colonisers had in mind when they invaded Peru in the 1500s. But in their hunt for gold, they overlooked a treasure right in front of them. Here in the Amazon’s fertile soil, the cacao tree has flourished for millennia. The topsoil here gives the beans a powerful and lingering flavour with a tart fruitiness – something approaching edible gold. Try it!
